Barb Catch Fishing

how to remove memory from fishing line

After fishing line has been on a reel spool for a long time, it can coil up and have a stiff, springy figure to it.

This often happens during the winter season when lots of anglers don’t fish for months at a time.

So if you do have this memory in your line, how do you remove it?

Which Fishing Line Has the Least Memory?

Braided fishing line. Braided line does not have any memory. You can leave braided line of the spool for years and it will never have any memory to it.

Fluorocarbon and monofilament fishing lines will pick up memory because of the thick, plastic material that they are maid of.

These two types of fishing line can start experiencing memory after a couple of months.

How to Remove Fishing Line Memory Coils

There is really only one way to remove memory from fishing line.

Step 1: Remove the Reel Spool

Removing the spool will make this much easier and protect the rest of the reel. Removing the spool is very easy for a spinning reel.

All you need to do is loosen the drag until the top of the reel twists off. Now the spool will slide right off.

Removing the spool is harder on a baitcasting reel. Rather than explaining it to you, just watch this quick video that explains if very well.

Step 2: Heat Up Some Water

Don’t boil water or use super how water.

Excessively hot water can damage the spool and potentially melt or weaken the fishing line.

Just fill a bowl with warm-hot water.

Step 3: Soak the Fishing Line

Place the spool of line into the warm water and let it soak for 4-5 minutes. You can also run the spool under warm water instead of soaking it in a bowl.

But, it a bit easier to let it sit rather than holding it under water for the whole time. Only let the spool sit for 4-5 minutes.

If you leave it in for hours, the spool could rust or get damaged.

This is all it takes. This process will remove almost all of the memory from your fishing line.

Preventing Line Memory

Fish regularly. If you are using your fishing line frequently, the line will not develop any memory.

The casting, reeling in, and hopefully tug of a fish on the end of your line will stretch out and straighten the line before it gets a chance to coil up.

There are also line spray and products that you can put onto your fishing line to help prevent these coils.

These products are very helpful in the winter months when you might not be fishing as regularly.

The same process can used for your leader lines when using braided main line.

Also make sure to keep your hooks sharp!

Reeling this In

It is actually very quick and easy to remove memory from fishing line. My best advice is to just fish as much as you can.

This will prevent line memory from happening, not allowing your fishing line to go bad, and help spend more time fish as well as catching.
