Ice fishing is a super fun way to fish, but comes with its own unique dangers. Once you know how to safely ice fish, it can be a super fun and rewarding way to spend the winter season outdoors.
We partnered with Callison Fishing on YouTube to go over the top 3 safety tips that will keep you from getting hurt out on the ice.
Ice Fishing Basics
Safety First:
- Check ice thickness before venturing out. Aim for at least 4 inches of solid, clear ice.
- Never fish alone.
- Let someone know your plans.
- Carry ice picks and a rope.
- Be aware of currents and weak spots.
Gear Up:
- Ice auger to drill holes.
- Ice fishing rod and reel.
- Line, hooks, and bait.
- Lures or jigs.
- Bucket or sled to carry gear.
Find Your Spot:
- Look for areas where fish congregate (drop-offs, weed lines).
- Check local fishing reports.
- Consider using a fish finder.
Techniques:
- Jigging: Move your lure up and down to attract fish.
- Still fishing: Use bait and wait for a bite.
- Tip-ups: Set baited lines and wait for the flag to signal a fish.
Regulations:

Stay Warm:
