Top 3 Braided Fishing Line Tips

Braided line is a must have tool for bass fishing. It has bunch of different advantages and is critical for certain techniques. And there are a few ways that you can elevate your fishing success with braided line. I’ll quickly go over the top 3 braided fishing line tips that will help you catch more fish.

Braided Line Tips

1. Sharpie Your Braided Line

This may sound a bit strange, but it is actually makes a huge difference when using braided line. What happens with braid is that the color starts to fade after a while.

No matter what color braid you buy, the constant in and out of the water will fade the color and turn it into a pale grey or white color.

This makes the braided line much brighter and more visible in the water. Picky bass will stay away from your lures when the see the bright line attached to them.

But all you have to do to fix this is take a sharpie and color the last couple feet of the braid black. This darkens the line up and returns it to its original design.

Once the line is dark again, it blends in better with the water and is harder for fish to see, making them more likely commit to your lures.

2. Use Backing Under Your Braid

braided line backing

Backing is when you put about 20-30 yards of non-braided line (usually monofilament or co-polymer because they are the cheapest) on to your reel before spooling up the braided line.

So you have nylon fishing line connected directly to your reel spool and then the braid on top of that line connected to it. Backing does two things for you.

First, it allows you to use much less braided line every time you spool up. So if you can save the extra line and save money on the next spool.

Or if you get a bird’s nest and lose a bunch of line, you are losing a lot less because there is only 50-60 yards of braid on the spool at a time.

And second, the mono or co-polymer backing will give some cushion underneath the zero stretch braid.

This will help prevent slipping on the spool during hard hook sets or hard fighting fish.

It also prevents your spool from becoming too stiff and hard to deal with because it adds some cushion underneath the braid.

3. Pick the Right Color Braid

braided line colors

There are a bunch of different braided line colors you can buy. And the color actually does serve a purpose. But out of all the dozens of color options, there are only two categories that matter.

These are very dark color lines and very bright color lines.

First, very dark colors like black or moss green are what you should use with your baitcasting setups.

When fishing braid on a baitcaster, you are rarely going to be using a leader because you need maximum power from the setup.

So your braid will be tied directly to the lure, and visibility is the number one thing. Like we discussed earlier, the darker color braided line will he harder for fish to see, and will be better when fishing braid on a baitcaster.

Second, very bright colors (or commonly called “High Vis) like yellow, pink, or neon green are helpful when fishing finesse, spinning gear.

With spinning gear, you are pretty much always going to be using a long fluorocarbon or monofilament leader, so the fish will never see the braid at all.

But the High Vis braided line is helpful because it helps the angler see the line better. If a fish barely bites your bait, it is easy to see the bright line jump or move.

And it is also easier to see how far or how deep your bait is with the High Vis line.

So really all that you need to know is if you are fishing a baitcaster, use dark colored braid. And if you are using spinning gear, use bright colored braid.
