Best Jig Trailer for Spring Bass Fishing

best spring jig trailer

The jig is potentially the best year-round bass lure of all time. And one reason for this is that you can slightly alter your jig to optimize it during each season of the year.

And the best way to optimize your jig is to rig it up with the correct trailer. Now I prefer to keep my trailers very simple, so let me break down the why and what of the best jig trailer for spring bass fishing when the water is getting warm.

Best Style Jig Trailer for the Spring

As the spring jig fishing bite heats up, a swimming or flapping style of trailer will generally produce more bites than a chunk or beaver style trailer.

More Action

During the spring, as everything warms up, the underwater ecosystem gets very active and everything starts moving a lot more.

So you want to do the exact same thing with your jigs. And a trailer that actually swims and flaps its appendages does a great job of getting the warming bass fired up and gets crushed.

More Vibration

Another thing that happens during the spring time is rain, and lots of it. The spring rains will wash tons of mud and debris into the water and muddy things up a lot. ‘

So having a bit extra vibration and water movement from your jig trailer helps bass find the jig easier in the water.

They can feel the swimming vibrations with their lateral line, hone in on the jig, and ultimately bite your jig more.

Rapala CrushCity CleanUp Craw

A Rapala CrushCity Cleanup Craw comes from the mind of 2019 Major League Fishing world champion Jacob Wheeler, like all CrushCity soft baits.

Wheeler’s dream craw bait is 3.5″ long with claws that provide tight-kicking action. The CrushCity crawfish bait gets subtle secondary action from forward-facing legs.

The back ribs on the Rapala Cleanup Craw provide the meat to rig up from either side to maximize the life of the bait and protect the hook point.

Rapala CrushCity custom baits feature custom combinations of color, flake, salt, and scent added to the bait in the best locations – Smart Injection Technology, it’s called – for the perfect presentation.

Craw Trailer Rigging Tip

Before rigging your swimming craw, or CleanUp Craw, onto your jig, trim off about 1/4-1/2 inch off of the back of the bait.

This will help keep your jig profile a bit more compact which helps a lot to make your jig look more natural, increase hook-up ratio, and aid in skipping the jig up under structure.

Spring Jig Colors

Like I mentioned earlier, the water is usually quite muddy during the spring months. So black and blue is my favorite jig color this time of year.

The black and blue helps give a darker, clearer silhouette in the muddy water, helping the bass find you jig a bit better.

If the water happens to be quite clear in your body of water, the standard browns and green pumpkin colors work great too.

Reeling this In

To optimize your jig for the active spring bite, choose a swimming or flapping trailer over a chunk style.

This provides the increased action and vibration needed to trigger warming bass and help them find the lure in muddy spring water.

The Rapala CrushCity CleanUp Craw is a top recommendation. For rigging, trim off 1/4-1/2 inch of the trailer’s head for a more compact profile.

Use black and blue jigs in muddy water, or browns/green pumpkin if the water is clear. Simple adjustments lead to more bites!
