The 3 Best Budget Swimbait Reels for 2026

Swimbait fishing is one of the most exciting techniques in all of bass fishing. Big swimbaits are super fun to fish and catch HUGE bass. But the big baits usually come with a big price tag.
And not just the baits themselves, but the swimbait rods and reels are often super expensive, which makes it very difficult for guys to get into swimbait fishing.
So if you want to get into fishing big swimbaits but don’t have limitless money, we have found the best budget swimbait reels for 2025.
1. Kastking Megatron 200

Price: $74.99
Kastking is my absolute favorite company for budget fishing rods and reels. Because they cut out middle men during the manufacturing process, Kastking is able to produce the same products at a lower price than other companies.
Unleash serious power on the water with the KastKing Megatron 200 Baitcasting Reel. Engineered for both fresh and saltwater dominance, this reel combines a robust design with smooth performance, making it ideal for targeting trophy fish with large baits.
Why it makes a great swimbait reel:
- High Line Capacity: The wider frame and larger capacity spool can hold up to 130 yards of 17 lb mono line, providing ample space for the heavier lines often used with swimbaits.
- Exceptional Drag Power: With up to 28.6 lbs of smooth, triple-disc carbon drag, the Megatron 200 offers the significant stopping power needed to handle the strong strikes and heavy pulls of fish attracted to large swimbaits, such as Muskie, Catfish, and Salmon/Steelhead.
- Optimized Casting Control: The reliable nine-level adjustable magnetic braking system, featuring an internal 8-button magnetic system, is crucial for minimizing overruns and maximizing casting distance. This precision control is particularly beneficial when launching large, heavy swimbaits, ensuring accurate and efficient presentations.
- Durable and Smooth Operation: Built with precision-machined brass main and pinion gears for strength and 7+1 double-shielded, stainless-steel ball bearings for consistent smoothness, this reel is designed to withstand the demands of throwing big baits and fighting big fish.
- Comfortable Handling: Despite its power and capacity, it maintains a low-profile design for comfortable all-day fishing, complemented by a wide 105mm aluminum handle arm with 3A Cork knobs for superior control during retrieves and battles.
The KastKing Megatron 200 is our go-to budget reel for a powerful and controlled swimbait fishing experience.
2. Shimano SLX

Price: $99.99
The Shimano SLX Low-Profile Casting Reel combines a compact body with a deep spool. The rigid aluminum frame provides a solid platform that virtually eliminates body flexing, allowing you to put the cranking power where you need it most! The hardened brass gears and four ball bearings work to create a smooth retrieval.
The SLX Casting Reel features Shimano’s Variable Brake System (VBS) allows for consistent, long-distance casts as well as accurate short pitches. Outfitted with a long handle and power knobs, this baitcasting reel lets you stay comfortable all day long.
The SLX Reel is 20% smaller than the Shimano Caenan reel, making it easier for you to palm. The Shimano SLX Low-Profile Casting Reel will have you increasing your casting distances and landing those trophy fish in no time!
NOTICE: The Shimano SLX is only a 150 sized reel, so it is suggested that you fish the smaller sized swimbaits on the SLX. It can handle 1-3oz swimbaits quite well, but if you are using swimbaits over 3oz I suggest going with one of the other 2 reels.
- Compact and rigid body
- Long, comfortable handle
- Power knobs
- Hardened brass gear
- Great for tournament anglers
- HAGANE Body

Price: $129.99
The KastKing Kapstan Elite Size 300 is a formidable baitcasting reel engineered for competitive angling and designed to dominate with large baits, making it an exceptional choice for swimbait enthusiasts.
Its robust construction and high-performance features provide the power and capacity needed for serious swimbait fishing.
Why it makes a great swimbait reel:
- Massive Line Capacity: With a wide body design that can accommodate over 230 yards of 14 lb mono or 50 lb KastPro braid, this reel allows for the long casts and heavy lines frequently used with large swimbaits, ensuring you have enough line to manage powerful runs.
- Unrivaled Stopping Power: The triple-disc carbon drag system delivers an impressive 35+ lbs of fish-stopping drag, essential for effectively battling the large, hard-fighting fish that often strike swimbaits.
- Enhanced Control and Leverage: The wide (5.1 inches) aluminum handle, paired with large, comfortable EVA grips, provides superior leverage and control when retrieving heavy swimbaits or fighting trophy-sized fish.
- Built for Durability: Featuring tournament-proven components like manganese brass main and pinion gears and a stainless-steel main shaft, the Kapstan Elite ensures smooth, quiet operation and long-lasting durability, even under the constant stress of casting and retrieving heavy swimbaits.
- Optimal Gear Ratio: The 5.4:1 gear ratio provides incredible power and torque, which is highly advantageous for effectively working large, deep-diving swimbaits, heavy jigging lures, or trolling applications.
- Precision Braking: A reliable centrifugal braking system helps to eliminate frustrating overruns, ensuring smooth and accurate casts, even when launching bulky and heavy swimbaits.
The KastKing Kapstan Elite Size 300 Double Handle Baitcasting Reel is built to give you the competitive edge and confidence required for successful swimbait fishing.

Line Choice for Big Swimbait Fishing
I suggest using 17-20 lb fluorocarbon line. If you are using one of the smaller sized glide baits, 17 will work just fine. But once you start fishing the bigger, heavier swimbaits, 20lb line will become necessary.
You can also fish a 30+ lb braided mainline so that you can make sure the line is heavy enough without using a super stiff and unmanageable fluoro line. And then just use a 17-20 lb fluoro leader.
